Hard water compounds the problem. Calcium and magnesium minerals in the water bond with detergent before it ever reaches your clothes, leaving behind a dull, chalky film on fabric fibers. That film doesn’t just sit on top of the color; it changes how light reflects off the fabric, which is why clothes washed in hard water often look faded even when the dye itself is intact.

Because the change is slow, it gets attributed to age or poor-quality fabric rather than the detergent that’s been running across every fiber every week.

For dark and color-sensitive garments, look for a liquid detergent that skips oxygen bleach altogether. Liquid formulas also dissolve more evenly than powder, which means less concentrated contact with any single part of a garment.
Dryer sheets work by coating fabric fibers with a thin, waxy layer that reduces static. That same coating traps whatever residue is already on the fabric, whether it’s leftover detergent, hard water minerals, or both, and holds it against the fibers through the heat of the drying cycle. Heat plus trapped residue accelerates dye breakdown in a way that a clean, residue-free dry cycle doesn’t.

Most people notice the dryer sheet towel feels slightly waxy and looks duller sooner. If that matches what you see, switch to wool dryer balls for static control, or limit dryer sheets to lightly worn loads and keep them away from dark or color-sensitive clothing entirely.
Most dryers have a moisture sensor that’s supposed to stop the cycle once clothes are dry. Plenty of people override it anyway, adding extra time “just to be safe.” That extra time is where a lot of unnecessary fading happens.
While fabric is still damp, moisture acts as a buffer between the heat and the dye. Once fabric is fully dry, that buffer is gone, and continued heat exposure acts directly on the dye bonds themselves.

But a drying rack set up next to a sunny window exposes clothes to the same UV rays that fade outdoor furniture and curtains. Glass filters out some UV light, but not all of it, and dye pigment breaks down under prolonged exposure even at a lower intensity.
The tell-tale sign: the side of the garment that faces the window fades faster than the side facing into the room. If your indoor-dried garments have developed uneven color across the front and back panels, UV from the window is almost certainly the cause.

Wet fabric sitting in a closed washer keeps residual detergent and water in prolonged contact with the fibers. That extended contact time gives any remaining bleach or mineral content more opportunity to act on the dye.
If any garment in the load is prone to dye bleeding, wet clothes in close contact for an hour create ideal conditions for dye transfer. The transferred dye may not be visible as a stain but can subtly shift the color of lighter pieces in the load.
Both problems also create the conditions for mildew odor, which usually means re-washing the load, doubling the chemical exposure the fabric gets before it’s even worn once.
